Inside the academy: Dr. David C. Berliner- Significant Accomplishments part 3 of 3

About Inside the Academy

http://insidetheacademy.asu.edu/

The inaugural taping of Inside the Academy featured Dr. David C. Berliner, Regents Professor of Education at arizona state university.

We believe an educational researcher is an artist or master of his or her craft, in much the same way as an actor or actress. Further, we believe it is equally entertaining, enlightening, and inspiring to hear from the best masters in the field of education. Inside the Academy provides members of the National Academy of Education an opportunity to share their passion for educational research in a format similar to Bravo’s Emmy award winning show Inside the Actors Studio.

Each interview is hosted by Audrey Amrein-Beardsley and is organized as follows:

1. This is Your Life (introduction to the guest)
2. Significant Accomplishments (contributions to educational research)
3. Philosophical Questions (probing questions from the host)
4. Last Lecture (a special presentation from our guest)
5. Audience Questions (open forum)

Tamra Kaspryzk: A Study in the Grammar of Guaranai

Written by admin on Jul 17th, 2009 | Filed under: university of arizona

Tamra was a senior majoring in Spanish at the university of arizona. She spent the summer of 2008 in Paraguay studying the Paraguayan-GuaranĂ dialect, which is spoken by indigenous populations in South America and is the second most commonly spoken language in Paraguay after Spanish. Kaspryzk’s motive was to understand the phonetics and morphology of the language. Among her most notable findings was the use of compound words. Tamra noted that “family member relations in this language are marked differently.” That goes for a person’s place and often age in a family. A sister might use two words for “brother” depending on whether she is referring to an older or younger sibling, said Kaspryzk. Tamra graduated in May 2009 and was awarded the College of Humanities Van de Verde Memorial Scholarship.
