What are the best schools in the Phoenix, AZ area for Elementary education & beyond?

I was told Gilbert had the best schools in the whole state of AZ so we moved there. My 5th grader goes to Gilbert El and I am not happy with the work he is bringing home. He's learning what he already learned in NY in the 3rd grade! Please help!! We will move wherever my children can get the best Education. Maybe that is out of Arizona altogether. That remains to be seen! Thank you!

Arizona schools in general s**k unfortunately. The best districts are Kyrene (Ahwatukee) and Scottsdale Public. I'm not sure who suggested Gilbert was. You don't have to move as long as you are willing to drive every day. AZ has an open enrollment policy so your kids can go anywhere not just where you live, and there are heaps of open enrollment charter schools around.

My daughter has been attending a fairly new free public charter school that I have been reasonablely pleased with so far, definitely different than the work I would expect from a public school. It is just outside Ahwatukee at 51st St & Elliot - Ahwatukee Foothills Prep. I know several moms that drive in from Chandler, Gilbert, and even Queen Creek because of the schools in their own neighborhoods being so bad. The key really is to find schools with good teachers. Also it is not surprising to me that Kyrene & Scottsdale also have the largest percentage of educated involved parents.

Check out this website. It is a great way to review schools.

If you want to spring for a private school (about $450/mo + after care if needed), there is one in Mesa that I've heard great things about called Dobson Montessori. The 8:1 student/ teacher ratio is amazing alone.
