Is Flagstaff, Arizona typically a cold place during the winter time?

Written by admin on Feb 4th, 2010 | Filed under: arizona universities

I currently live in Long Island, New York and I’m looking to go to college in a warmer place because I simply cannot bear NY winter months but unfortunately I think that the college I applied to (northern arizona university) is located in a not so warm part of Arizona.

NAU is not for you :) People who love winter sports are drawn to Flagstaff with its Snowbowl ski resort. It’s definitely located in a cold climate. ASU in Phoenix would be the warmest if you can tolerate our hot summers (takes a while to acclimate) and U of A in Tucson would be slightly cooler.

  1. Yes, it’s very cold. The elevation in Flagstaff is about 7000 feet — higher than Denver, CO. It snows a lot in Flagstaff during the winter, and sometimes the temperature can dip below zero. If you wanted a warmer climate, that’s not the school for you. Perhaps Arizona State (in Tempe, near Phoenix) or Univ. or Arizona (in Tucson) would suit you better.

  2. It’s not frigid, in fact it may be slightly warmer than Long Island based on the almanac I looked at on Wunderground.com, however you didn’t pick the warmest place in the world. When I was looking at colleges I factored where I went based on weather as well. I chose Southeast Texas and boy was it wonderful. I think the temperature dropped below 30 once the whole time I was in school.

I would suggest looking into a few other places if you still have time. If you’re willing to travel to Arizona why not look at schools in warmer parts of the state as well as, California (southern California!), Texas, and Florida?

    Hope this helps.

  3. It is in Northern Arizona in Flagstaff a small town in the mountains with a railroad running through it. There are other places to see in Northern Arizona such as Sedona where the beautiful red rock landscapes and the Navajo tribal lands in Northeastern AZ. Northern Arizona has a temperate climate all year unlike southern Arizona except in winter when it snows. There is skiing there and in the summer Lake Powell for boating. The landscape is different from LI for sure. But it does not get humid anywhere in the summer.

  6. Haha, yeah, if you’re trying to get away from winter, do not go to NAU. Flagstaff right now is under several feet of snow and has been like blizzard weather the past few weeks. If you’re coming to AZ for college for the warmth, you need to go to either ASU in Tempe (part of Phoenix), or U of A in Tucson.
