Why would parents pull their children out of school during Obama speech?

Written by admin on Sep 10th, 2009 | Filed under: arizona department of education

If people want to understand what all the fuss is about, reading the actual materials from the US Department of Education will not help them. Nothing of what they are complaining about is to be found in the materials prepared for teachers. Here, check them out for yourselves, you can download them:

I just got done reading it all and find nothing in there that is indoctrinary or offensive. The content is all rather routine. Written by teachers, it is a set of class room exercises, the sort of thing every teacher sees every day of their careers.

Once again we have a manufactured controversy. Not about anything Obama has done or wants to do, but grown out of the blind hatred coming from people who cannot tolerate losing an election.

I am an independent voter of conservative leanings. So long as this kind of crazy talk is coming from the GOP side, I will continue to vote against that side. There is simply no way I am going to risk my vote on a political party that is so enamored of their own mythology that they dream up Grand Conspiracies and Evil Intentions for everything the opposing party does or says.

Go sell your "Crazy" someplace else, I ain’t buying it.

Arizona is 50 out of 50 in education. DEAD LAST!!!!! WAKE UP!!!!!!!!
And you want to pull your child out of school.
What sad souls!
Please stop with the Obama worship comments. Does your hate and ignorance run that deep? People elected a President they respect and love. Is that so wrong?

It’s not a question of whether or not the material is offensive, but this is a very Fidel Castro way of things. He would make addresses to school children VERY often. It’s a very easy way to get into a lot of clueless, innocent children’s heads. Have you not seen this "I pledge…" video? THIS is what is going to be shown to children. Once of the last lines states that, "I pledge to be a SERVANT TO OUR PRESIDENT and mankind." That’s not cause for concern??? A SERVANT???!?!?!?! This is outrageous and scary. If you think otherwise you’re just as brainwashed and the other who think this is alright.

  1. Because they don’t want their children to be hypnotized.

  2. So their children do not have to fill out the Orwelllian work sheet the White House sent to the schools.

  3. No idea. Paranoia? I think its a brilliant Idea on Obama’s part. Too bad I’ll be out of school that day but whatever. I think students should listen. He’s the president whether you like him or not. I disliked Bush but I watched everyone of his televised speeches. People have to stay informed.

  6. Because they don’t want their kids being forced to worship some demagogue. I would too. Indoctrinate your own kids to this crap, I will teach mine to think for themselves.

  7. Because they can’t afford to pull them out of the public school, socialist indoctrination full time! So at least pulling them out while the communist leader speaks is a start.

  8. To Republicans, Obama represents the devil. They are opposed to absolutely everything he does. They can’t separate religion and politics. They even promote torture.

  13. There is no reason to pull your children out. This is only a fear tactic by the right to try to weaken Obama’s popularity. I have raised my children to be strong individuals and to go out onto the world and face many challenges and temptations therefore I don’t think they will be brainwashed by Obama or anyone else. People who think their children will be brainwashed have simply done a very poor job as parents and raised puppets instead of strong individuals. If you think your kid is going to be hypontized by Obama, because he talks to them about education then blame yourself for raising weak kids. If listening to the President is so dangerous, please never let your kids leave the house because they will face things 100 times worse in the real world.

  14. How many times is this question going to be asked and answered? It is no body’s business whether a parent keeps their child home on 9/8 but the parents themselves. If you want your child to be there that’s up to you. You already are indoctrinating your child in the Obama fashion. I am not. I just believe differently. That is my right. Just for the record, I home school, and no it will not be broadcast in my home.

  15. Arizona is pretty much in the toilet in terms of education in general. Lived there for 17 years, met more complete illiterates than in the whole rest of my LIFE, and about half had college degrees and could barely comprehend a written page. And yes, they all went to school there…and I am SURE their morass has gotten worse!

But more germane: The crackpot ultra-right reactionary movement–those who call themselves "conservative pundits"–are using their own form of preemptive censorship on what is actually a very mundane message. It’s part of their Neo-Nazi plans to isolate this administration and make the country as hostile and violent as possible. And don’t kid yourself, they know this!

But I guess if some misguided parent wants to defend his child’s "right to total ignorance", well, let them do it. Me, I never thought imbuing a child with loathing and hatred was in the parental job description.

Folks, Presidents have addressed kids for a very long time, usually about how government works and things such as having confidence in themselves and their ability to achieve great things. If you see something sinister in that, you should probably see a psychiatrist.

I never objected when Bush or other Republican leaders did it, and do so now, with all the economy the way it is, their preposterous foolishness is worse than ludicrous. It’s self-destructive.

  17. Your link may explain objectives of a class program, however, it fails to address the controversy created in the accompanying "classroom activities suggested to coincide with the President’s address." Unless you have read the original curriculum forwarded to all School Districts in the US on 8-26-09 by Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, you can’t defend agaist the objections of millions of parents and many school administrators. To read the website postings today by the Ed Dept will not reflect the original context. The objections are not limited to AZ. The following represents something personal to my life:

My niece teaches 10th grade science and math in Tucson. Her husband, a career Air National Guard aircraft mechanic emailed me "that if this were Bush, she would call for a boycott and refuse to acknowledge the curriculum. He said that she sees nothing wrong with Obama’s classroom participation, and looks forward to Tuesday." He says, go figure!
