Dr. Joanne Cacciatore of Arizona State University receives the Hon Kachina Award on behalf of the MISS Foundation
In October of 2007, Dr. Joanne Cacciatore of arizona state university received the prestigious Hon Kachina Award. This award was for her work as CEO and Founder of the MISS Foundation, an international nonprofit organization that bring aid, hope, and comfort to families facing the death of a child. “Joanne has been extremely dedicated to her volunteer work, and I am impressed with her compassion for helping families in their time of grief,” said John Hepburn, dean of the College of Human Services. “She has served as an invaluable link between ASU’s Social Work department and the community of practitioners with professional interests in treating loss and bereavement.” Dr. Cacciatore believes that with a compassionate supportive community that does not rage to cure them of the uncurable, grieving parents can slowly find joy and purpose again in their lives. “It’s important for people experiencing trauma to have permission to do what they must do to become who they must become.”

Yuma, Arizona native Carolina Alforo had dreams for making a better life for herself and her family. Pursuing a diploma in Massage Techniques from Ashworth University’s Career School was the first step to reaching her goal of becoming a child care management specialist.
Alforo’s years of study, balancing life and family obligations began to pay off when she received her diploma from Ashworth, a leader in distance education. However, there was still one thing missing… the opportunity to attend her graduation ceremony which would be held August 9 in Norcross, GA.
Enter veteran TV host Cristina Saralegui. Familiarly known as the Latina “Oprah,” Saralegui is a revered activist among the Hispanic community. Through her Univision show, The Cristina Show, she hosts a one-hour, primetime special entitled Soñando Contigo (”Dreaming with You”) which aims to make a dream a reality for a deserving Hispanic family or individual.
Alfaro’s story came to the attention of show producers who were reviewing thousands of requests for the September 15 segment which will air on Univision at 10:00 p.m., EST. Coming from a family of seven, Alfaro is the first to complete a higher education program. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented her from attending her Ashworth graduation ceremony in Norcross, a community just north of Atlanta.
“We reviewed thousands of letters,” said Isabel Cuervo, Cristina Show producer. “Having the opportunity to meet Carolina and her family, we know we made the right selection. She is goal-oriented and very deserving.”
On August 6, 2008, representatives from Soñando Contigo flew to Yuma where they surprised her with a special graduation present — an opportunity for her and her parents to attend the Ashworth’s ceremony. Within 24 hours, Carolina, her parents and the production crew arrived in Atlanta for a whirlwind of graduation activities.
In this video, from Ashworth’s 2008 Graduation Ceremony, Carolina shares are experiences as an Ashworth student with her Massage Techniques Instructor, Kristy McIntyre Carter.

I am 21 years old and am transferring to university of arizona from the state of Virginia. I have no family in Arizona, and the car I have right now cost $400 (including insurance) a month.
I can’t afford to have a car, and am wondering if I can make due without in Tucson?
I thought about going to University of San Francisco, hut heard that is a very terrible place to go if you are a single female.
Yeah, you will be fine. I have lived in Tucson all my life, and I have a couple friends that go to U of A and don’t have a car. You just have to make sure you live close enough to school you can walk, or ride bike OR live in the student housing that has free shuttles to school (like the Seasons, Northpoint, Star Pass..). You can always ride the city bus too. The campus isn’t that spread out. Many people do it! Good luck and enjoy Tucson - It’s 108 degrees today ugh!!
I am about to major in Family studies and Human Development and maybe minor in Sociology and am trying to figure out if the work load would be manageable enough at the university of arizona, or if I might actually want to try applying at arizona state university instead, even though I know the U of A is a better school. I’m not a great student, but I try hard and did make A’s in high school even though they weren’t very hard classes (college prep ones). I also have major ADD, so I know which ever college I go to, I’ll be registering with the disabled student department. So anyway….any details or suggestions and advice would be greatly appreciated.
?? I don’t understand the question. Either way, you’ll take the same/similar classes.

As a young graduate, he apprenticed for two years in Hatton Gardens, Londons renowned jewelry district. Adventure then called young Cornelis to Johannesburg, South Africa, the diamond and gold capital of the world, where he opened his own studio and started designing jewelry. Living and traveling in Africa, the young designers imagination and creativity were blooming. After several years in South Africa, adventure called again—this time to America, where Cornelis and future wife, Christa, settled in Phoenix, Arizona.
Over the years, his natural talent was refined by education, travel and diversified cultural experiences. Today he is one of the premiere jewelry designers in the world. When asked how he comes up with new design ideas, he replies, Its like poetry. When a poet sees beautiful scenery, a poem naturally flows into his mind. Just by looking at a beautiful gemstone, I can envision the finished piece. Thats why I say creativity is akin to a waterfall—all of the elements fall together.
Old-world training and experience, combined with state-of-the-art innovations, make Cornelius Hollander a jewellery designer of distinction. His passion for beauty, his dedication to excellence and his unique vision promise a future filled with elegant, wearable art in motion.
